Endotracheal Tube Obstruction
Thick mucus plug causing near-complete ET tube obstruction acute respiratory distress emergent extubation

Complete or near-complete endotracheal tube obstruction can happen suddenly and unexpectedly.  It is a threat to life and must be addressed immediately.  The usual clinical approach is to emergently exubate the patient, with or without reintubation.  However, this results in loss of control of the airway, and may also lead to problems with oxygenation, ventilation, aspiration, arrythmias and other serious clinical problems including cardiac arrest.  In brief, these common approaches to dealing with the problem of endotracheal tube obstruction may result in equally problematic clinical scenarios for the patient.

The CAM Rescue Cath™ facilitates removal of endotracheal tube secretion 'plugs' without removal or exchange of the endotracheal tube.  Clearance of secretions with the Rescue Cath™ preserves control of the artificial airway, thereby avoiding the risks of emergent exutbation and/or reintubation.  The procedure takes only seconds and the institution's resource utilization is markedly improved.
